Top Winter Care Tips for Cats

Winter can be a challenging time for cats, especially those who spend time outdoors or live in colder climates. Here are some essential winter care tips to help keep your feline friend warm, comfortable, and healthy through the season:
1. Keep Indoor Cats Warm and Cozy
- Create warm spots with blankets or cat beds in areas away from drafts or cold floors. Cats love to curl up in cozy, sheltered spots, so consider setting up a bed near a radiator or providing a heated pet mat.
- If your cat likes to sunbathe, make sure they have a sunny spot to enjoy by opening blinds or moving a bed near the window.
2. Limit Outdoor Time for Outdoor Cats
- If your cat spends time outdoors, try to limit their time outside during extremely cold weather. Frostbite and hypothermia are real risks for cats in freezing temperatures.
- Provide a safe, insulated shelter for them outside if they’re allowed to roam. The shelter should be off the ground and have a small opening to retain warmth. Straw (not hay) is a good insulating material.
3. Check for Hidden Cats Under Cars
- Cats sometimes hide under cars or in wheel wells for warmth. Knock on the hood of your car or honk the horn before starting the engine to ensure a cat isn’t hiding there. This can save a cat from injury or worse.
4. Adjust Caloric Intake as Needed
- Cats may need more calories in winter, especially if they spend time outdoors, to maintain their body heat. Monitor your cat’s weight and consult your vet about adjusting their diet if you notice any changes.
- Indoor cats, however, may become less active in winter and need fewer calories to avoid weight gain. Watch their eating habits and adjust portions accordingly.
5. Regularly Check Water Sources
- Cats need fresh water, even in winter, and if they have access to outdoor water, ensure it doesn’t freeze. An insulated or heated water bowl can be helpful for cats that spend time outdoors.
- Indoor cats also benefit from drinking more water to stay hydrated, especially since winter heating can dry out the air.
6. Provide Extra Moisture for Skin and Coat
- The dry winter air can lead to flaky, dry skin for cats. Regular brushing helps spread natural oils, keeping the skin healthy and preventing tangles.
- Humidifiers can add moisture to the air indoors, which is beneficial for both cats and humans during winter.
7. Watch Out for Dangerous Chemicals
- Antifreeze, salt, and de-icing chemicals are toxic to cats and other pets. If your cat goes outside, be sure to wipe their paws when they come in to prevent ingestion of any harmful substances.
- Always store chemicals securely out of your cat’s reach, as they are often attracted to the sweet taste of antifreeze, which is highly toxic.
8. Keep Them Engaged Indoors
- Indoor enrichment is key during winter when cats may be less inclined to go outside. Engage your cat with interactive toys, puzzle feeders, and cat trees to keep them mentally and physically stimulated.
- Place bird feeders outside windows so your cat can safely watch the birds and stay entertained.
9. Prepare a Winter Emergency Kit
- Prepare a small emergency kit with extra food, water, any medications, blankets, and a carrier in case you need to evacuate due to a winter storm or power outage.
- Also, ensure you have access to a veterinarian in case your cat faces a winter-related health issue.
10. Schedule a Winter Check-Up
- Winter can be tough on older cats or those with health issues like arthritis. Cold weather may aggravate joint pain. Check with your vet for supplements or treatments that can help alleviate discomfort.
With these tips, you can help your cat stay warm, comfortable, and safe throughout the winter!
